The History of Cosbie Coatings

Crosbie Coatings was established in Wolverhampton in 1875 to manufacture a range of industrial paint coatings for the engineering industry in the “Black Country”. Over the years a number of products were developed, including industrial metal primers and finishes, wood primers, stove enamel and water-based emulsions.

In 1970 the Company was acquired by Thomas Varty who brought with him a further wealth of knowledge and experience from the paint industry to compliment the already successful operation
.

Tragedy struck in 1972 when a fire, the biggest in Wolverhampton since the war, raged through the factory destroying much of the manufacturing equipment. However, with the help of the work force, Thomas Varty was able to continue production with minimal disruption to his customers. This event had a significant input to the future as Thomas Varty realised that a similar disruption could ruin the Company. With this in mind he started to look for additional manufacturing facilities.

In 1973, to enhance the already comprehensive product range, a division of Griffiths Bros. was acquired, the trade name of Airspeed still being a market leader today. Continued expansion eventually led to the acquisition of Williams Casco Limited, a Company established in 1846 and by coincidence one which Thomas Varty had previously worked for. Manchester based, Williams Casco specialised in high performance coatings and would open further specialised doors. More importantly a second manufacturing base would prevent any loss of production in the event of fire, etc.

The combination of two companies was now an even greater challenge for the Varty family and Thomas' two sons, Michael and Ian became increasingly involved. Both can be found in the active, day to day running of the companies, Michael in production and sales and Ian in quality and administration.

Both companies are highly regarded by many of the leading United Kingdom architects and consulting engineers, their products being specified on major construction projects from airports to sports stadia, exhibition centres to power stations. Current customers include Perkins Engines, British Nuclear Fuels, CEGB, London Underground, ABB, Shepherd Construction, Burmah Castrol, to name but a few.

Company policy is to produce quality products and hence the progression by both companies to ISO 9002 accreditation.

Today, the Crosbie Casco Group are defying the industry trend of falling production figures and widespread redundancies. In fact each production facility is tooling up to increase production to meet our ever increasing demand from customers both new and old.
